>Based on an older idea, the Palace of the Parliament was built during Nicolae Ceaușescu’s time, in a period of great economic hardship. The dictator’s tendency was, on one hand, to concentrate all the central state organs in a single building, and on the other hand, Ceaușescu desired a seismically secure residence that could withstand even a potential nuclear attack.

>Architecturally, the Palace of the Parliament is one of the most controversial buildings in Romania: the chief architect compared it to Buckingham Palace in London and the Palace of Versailles in France.
